How to Multiquote and Embeding Quotes


Multiquote is for quoting not just one person, but multiple people. Here's how:

STEP 1: Go to the top of a page, and scroll down. As you see people you want to quote, click the Multiquote button that's next to their post. See a post by Islander you like, hit Multiquote. See a post by CN, click her Multiquote button. Etc. Notice how each time you click on someone's Multiquote button, that button turns red. This will show you the various people you have selected to Multiquote. If you clicked a wrong one, just click it a second time to deselect. All the red Multiquote buttons you've pushed will show you the various people you've chosen to quote within your own Reply post.

STEP 2: After you've made your selections... look for these two identical looking buttons that say Post a Reply at the top of the page or the bottom of the page:



Don't click on the first one. Click on the SECOND one (to the right of the one on the left).

A standard reply box will appear with all your selected posts in it. Then you can type in your own comments as usual and Send.

Frankly I've never used the Multiquote feature and find little or no need. But many of you asked, so there you go.

For "snipping" various extracts from an individual poster's comments, instead of their whole lengthy comment, I just click the regular Quote button next to their post, delete the stuff I don't want to quote, and put the exact command shown in red here [/quote] at the end of their partial remark that I want to call out, and at the beginning of the partial remark put their name in place of X's as shown in red here [quote="XXXXXX"]. Repeat those same commands for each "snippet" of text you want to call out from the person's longer post. You can then type your own remarks (without any bracketed commands) in between each of those quoted snippets. As you're editing your way through your post, periodically click the Preview button to see how it will look, and only click Send when it looks like you've done it correctly. Play around with it and you'll get the hang of it. It takes practice and a little trial and error more than anything. USE Preview a lot while you're learning!!! Until you click Send, nobody will see your errors!!!!

To embed a video:

1) Go down to the comment box and hit the preview button before you do anything.

2) You should come to a page with a similar blank box and more options on the task bar, (which appears just above the blank box.) Look for the one that I have circled in red in my screen shot below.



3) When you click on that button, the drop down box appears (as pictured.) Then, just paste in the url for the video and click 'ok.'

4) Your video address should appear in your comment and you can check to make sure it is working by hitting the 'preview' button. It should display the video embedded and ready to play. (In a separate box above the white one.)

5) When everything suits you, press 'send.'

(I'll add this because it is something I have discovered but may not occur for everyone. I can't get all videos to embed for me. I have discovered that if I go to the video on YouTube and click on the 'share' button under the video itself, an address appears--already highlighted. All I have to do is copy it and past it in the little box above, and it works. That method has never failed me.)

I'm going to attempt to add instructions for how to do a screen capture and how to add it to the forum. I'm worried about it.

I created it in word, but it looks kind of long and complicated. If you don't approve, please don't hesitate to delete it.

Add away Nan.....I wouldn't know if it was complicated or not....since I have no idea how to do it. Is there someone you can confer with?

To do a screen capture:
1) Press ‘control’ and ‘print screen’ keys at the same time.

2) Go to your ‘Paint’ program. From the menu bar select ‘Edit,’ then ‘Paste’ from the drop down menu. Your screen capture should appear.

3) Select the ‘cut’ feature from the menu to the left on your ‘Paint’ program. Draw a box around what you want to capture. Then go back up to the ‘Edit’ button and select ‘Cut’ from the drop down box. Now you should see your original capture with a hole in it.

4) Next, return to the menu bar and select ‘File,’ then ‘New’ from the drop down menu. You will be prompted to save the capture with the hole in. Say ‘Don’t Save.’ A new blank ‘Paint’ screen will then appear.

5) Go to ‘Edit,’ then ‘Paste.’ The portion you cut should now appear.

6) Go to ‘File,’ then ‘Save.’ Give it a title, then click ‘Save.’ (Be careful to put it in a folder where you will be able to find it. Options for this are offered at the top of your ‘Save’ box.)

Alternative:
If your computer has a feature called a ‘Snipping Tool,’ you can also use this to get a screen capture. It saves quite a few steps. Just have your page ready, open your ‘Snipping Tool,’ and your cursor should change to something that resembles a bolded plus sign. Click and drag it around what you want captured. As soon as you are finished, you should see a pop-up box with your capture inside of it. All you have to do now is click ‘Save,’ and make sure you put your capture in a folder where you can find it.

To add a screen capture to the forum:
1) Once you have your capture, go down to the quick reply box and find and click the button circled in red as shown in the capture below. This is the ‘Host An Image’ button.

After clicking it, a drop down menu will appear, as shown above. First make sure a black dot appears beside the word ‘file;’ then press the ‘Browse’ button. A ‘Choose File To Upload’ pop-up box should appear. You may have to direct it to the folder where you have saved what it is you wish to add to the forum. (Options for this are at the top of your box.) Once there, select it and click the ‘Open’ button.

2) An ‘address’ should now appear in your ‘Upload your image’ box. Now click the ‘Host It’ button. Your box will now change to look like the screen capture below.

► If you want only a small ‘thumbnail’ of your picture to appear, select the first ‘copy’ button.
► If you want the actual image to appear in your comment, select the second ‘copy’ button.
► If you want only an address to appear that people will have to click on, select the third ‘copy’ button.

Once you press the copy button, a pop-up box will appear asking you for permission to allow the hosting web page to access your clipboard. You have to allow access or the program will not host your image. Before I give it access I always make sure I empty my clipboard first, but I am uneasy with this. (Following these instructions, I will show you another program that I use. Same results—but it does not request access to your clipboard. See ‘Alternative’ below.)

After you have allowed access to your clipboard, you will see that the address line beside the copy button that you selected is highlighted in blue.

Left click in your comment box, then right click and select ‘Paste.’ Your address should appear in your comment box. If you click on the ‘Preview’ button you should now see your screen capture. If you don’t click the ‘Preview’ button right away, you will have to click on the ‘Host An Image’ button to clear the pop-up box.

But that is it—you are done!

Alternative.
1) You may wish to add the following link to your bookmarks to keep it handy. Now, once you have your screen capture done and you want to add the capture to the forum, click on the following link.

You should see a box in the centre of the page that looks something the capture below.

2) Click on the browse button as shown in the capture above. The same ‘Choose File To Upload’ pop-up box should appear as in above Step 1 of ‘To add a screen capture to the forum.’ Again, you may have to direct it to the folder where you have saved what it is you wish to add to the forum. Once there, select it and click the ‘Open’ button. An address should now appear in the address line to the left of the ‘Browse’ button.

3) Make sure ‘Image’ is selected under ‘File Type,’ and click on the green ‘Upload Now!’ button. You will first get another pop-up box like the one below.

Just type in whatever it tells you to. I guess this is to prevent ‘spamming.’ The program needs to know you are not another computer. As soon as you are done, hit the green ‘Upload Now!’ button. It should bring you to a screen that looks something the capture below.

Select the ‘IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards’ and copy and paste it into your comment box.

4) When you click the ‘Preview’ button you should see your screen capture. And you are done. Smile 2

Not that I really know of, CB.

If you can get somebody to take a look at it, feel free to tell them they can make any changes they want. I do have that copy saved to word, so I could revise it to enter again without much effort.

Another thing I should mention is that I am still on Windows Vista. (I know that is embarrassing.) That could make a difference, too, in how things work for other people. I thought that just as general guidlines it might help, though.

I just discovered the 'snipping tool' the other day.

But, I think if you go to the 'All Programs' menu when you click the start button, you may see a folder called 'Accessories.' When I open that folder, one of things listed is the 'Snipping Tool.' I just click on it when I want to use it.

I haven't really tried it out that much, but it seems pretty cool.

Will have to play with it. Ya know what I like? My computer has little yellow post it notes

ETA: Found under Accessories....Sticky Notes
Just click on it and up pops a little yellow (or a variety of colors) sticky to slap onto your computer screen!

Posting to bump

Here's how to use the 'Multi-Quote' function... click on the 'multi-quote' button for each post you want to quote... the button will blush faintly... after all are selected... go to the bottom of the page and click on 'Post Reply'... all the multi-quoted posts should show up in your reply box... where each can be replied to individually... or as a group. Send it!
