Live updates: At least 12 dead in Washington Navy Yard shooting

WASHINGTON — At least 12 people, including a shooter, are confirmed dead in a rampage at the Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C., mayor Vincent Gray said Monday. Officials continue to search for two “potential” additional suspects in the case, D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier said, although other officials say the evidence indicates only one gunman was involved.


Officials said they still do not know a motive for the shooting but that they do “not have any evidence to think” that it was related to terrorism.

"We potentially have two other shooters that we have not located,” Lanier said in a brief news conference outside the gates to the sprawling base.

Lanier confirmed that one shooter had been killed, but said that police were still searching for a white male last seen about 8:35 Monday morning wearing khaki military-style clothes and a beret and carrying a handgun, and a black male about 50 years old, wearing a military-style olive, drab uniform who may have been carrying a rifle.

WASHINGTON — A shooting rampage at a U.S. Navy command complex in Washington left at least 13 people dead Monday, including a Navy veteran identified as the gunman, authorities said.

Aaron Alexis, 34, a civilian contractor from Fort Worth, was identified by officials as a shooter killed by officers responding to the the morning attack. A military official said Alexis had been a Navy reservist on active duty before being discharged for misconduct.

The carnage and desperate efforts by responding officers to stop the shooting gripped the nation's capital city in a tense, day-long drama just miles from the U.S. Capitol and White House. Hours after reports that Alexis was dead, city officials said they had not entirely ruled out the possibility another shooter was involved

Live updates: Navy Yard shooter 'had a pattern of misconduct'

WASHINGTON — The 34-year-old former Navy electrician’s mate identified as the gunman who killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard had been discharged from the service in 2011 after multiple disciplinary infractions, a Navy officer said Monday.


Aaron Alexis “had a pattern of misconduct,” the official said.

Law enforcement officials have identified Alexis as the shooter who went on a two-hour rampage at the sprawling naval base in Washington, but have not yet said what they believe was his motive.

Alexis, a native of New York, who served in the Navy from 2007 to 2011 as an aviation electrician’s mate 3rd class, entered the base early Monday morning, authorities said, perhaps using another man’s identification card to pass through the gates

Febbie I don't know what to think. Seems like everyone who thinks they have a statement to make chooses mass shootings. It is insane for a person to choose to murder innocent people they have never met. SMH, so sad.

this man was hearing voices... How did he get on base -- oh I know he had security clearance that needs to be looked in carefully.

ITA., when people act this way, it makes me mad that they were ever allow a gun. Those innocent people never did anything to him, if he had a problem with the higher authority, go to them and fight with paper and pencil!

Just because someone makes me mad, doesn't give me the right to go on a rampage and shoot everyone in my sight.
